Cover Letter/Statement of Purpose

Dear (Mr., Ms., Dr., etc.):

With over two years of experience working in the Internet and New Media industry, designing and developing Web sites and Web-based applications for both individuals and businesses, my skill set is one of great diversity. I've most recently been spending my time creating Flash applications that use Actionscript to load XML playlists into custom skinned FLV playback components. The user experience is always number one priority in the look-and-feel of my Web-based applications and print collateral. I have also had to work with other freelancers to create continuity with my client's brand standards in Web applications.

My formal training (during my first years of college) was in Graphic Design and I have years of experience designing Web sites, as well as experience integrating front-end development with the Ruby on Rails structure (keeping working copies updated through subversion). I create all my Web applications with the user experience as my highest priority. Many times that means spending much of my time creating multiple site architectures and interface layouts for my clients to preview. Other times it means researching javascript libraries (like: prototype, mochikit, scriptaculous, dojo, etc...) and keeping up with best practices through development tools like Mozilla's Firebug and Yahoos YSlow. I also am working on my ability to create AJAX applications for the web, taking advantage of all that Google has to offer web developer tools/APIs.

The knowledge, skills, and experiences I have obtained give the ability to bridge the gap between visually-oriented designers and analytically-thinking developers/programmers. Keeping a simple site structure with an understandable hierarchy is the best way to deliver information in the best possible manner to users. Functionally and aesthetics will change over time, but having a clear vision of how to deliver information is always paramount.

Enthusiasm for the future of web and graphic design is the character trait that makes me the ideal candidate for this position. The blend of technical knowledge, ability to create information architecture, graphic design talent, and the vision to see how they complement each other makes me a unique candidate. My attitude and experiences has giving me the ability to wear many hats and see that there are less limitations than possibilities in the future of web development.
